Workshops
Tune Into Music offers a variety of workshops which can be adapted to suit the needs of your teachers. Let us know if you'd like to run one (or more) of these workshops in your school/ centre or region.
Ukuleles and Recorders Unite! (Primary/ Intermediate)
Run in collaboration with Maria Winder, director of Sound of Music Education, Auckland, this workshop introduces these two great instruments in a fun and practical way and then shows how good they can sound together. Lots of great ideas to take back to your classroom. Suitable for primary and intermediate teachers. Generally a full-day workshop.
Music in Early Childhood (Early Childhood)
This workshop will explore how music can be shared with children in a balanced way that ensures valuable music learning. Music has the power to delight, intrigue and educate and every child has a right to high quality music experiences. All the basic elements of music, beat, rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics and tone colour can be experienced and explored in a programme that integrates listening, singing, playing, moving and creating.
Beginner Ukulele (Early Childhood, Primary, Intermediate)
This is a workshop for people who have never learnt ukulele before and would like to keep one chord (at least!) ahead of their students. You will learn some basic chords, a few strumming styles and how to read simple ukulele tablature with a few strategies for teaching included. Lots of laughs guaranteed.
A Taste of Orff (Early Childhood/ Primary)
Orff Schulwerk is a practical, creative and child-centred approach to music education which uses songs, dances, rhymes, clapping games, poetry and stories from the child's world. This workshop will give participants a small taste of many of the activities that are used to explore musical concepts in an imaginative way. Generally a 31/2 hour workshop.
Kiwi Kidsongs 17: Exploring the Potential (Primary)
This wonderful NZ resource was issued to primary schools in 2010 and had Values as its theme. In this interactive workshop, participants will explore the resource with a range of practical activities incorporating listening, singing, playing and moving experiences that can be adapted for all age-groups. Generally a 31/2 hour workshop.
Mad About Marimbas (Primary/ Intermediate)
Playing tuned percussion is a very valuable musical experience for children-they learn about all about the elements in music while being kinesthetically involved in an engaging musical experience. This workshop will explore a range of fun and practical ways teachers can involve their students in playing tuned percussion with ideas to take back to their classrooms and share with their students. Could be a full or half day workshop.
Rhythm and Rhyme: Using rhymes to motivate music (Early Childhood, Junior Primary)
This workshop will explore the elements and aspects of an early childhood/ primary music programme and consider ways these can be integrated throughout the day. We will use poetry and speech rhymes as a basis for developing music using imitation, exploration and improvisation. Participants will be involved in a simple process beginning with a small building block such as a poem, a chant, a patere or a song and will explore the possibilities for music and language learning through playing, moving and using the voice in a playful and creative way.
