About Us
Celia Stewart has been involved in music education for many years as a primary and early childhood teacher, lecturer in Early Childhood at the Christchurch College of Education, primary music adviser in Canterbury with UC EdPlus at the University of Canterbury and National Facilitator in Primary Music for the Ministry of Education.
She is currently a self-employed music educator and consultant whose most recent roles include running a junior Specialist Music Programme at Westburn Primary, directing a marimba band and instrumental group at Mt Pleasant primary, running an Orff class for 2-8 year olds at the Christchurch School of Music, writing resources for the Ministry of Education, project managing music events, running workshops for children and teachers and supporting schools in their music programmes. Celia is a flute and recorder player and enjoys the occasional opportunity to perform in local groups. In 2011 she has been having ukulele lessons to help keep one chord ahead of her students.
Celia has a strong interest in the Orff Schulwerk approach to music education and is currently working towards a Masters in Music Education through Waikato University with a focus on this approach.
She is the South Island rep on the committee of ONZA (Orff NZ Aotearoa), is on the board of MENZA (Music Education, NZ Aotearoa), and editor of the MENZA magazine, Sound Arts, president of MEC (Music Education Canterbury) and co-president of the Big Band Festival Committee in Christchurch
